Background of the Study
Augmented reality (AR) technologies are progressively altering the landscape of digital library services by overlaying virtual information onto physical spaces, thereby creating immersive search experiences. At Abia State University, the implementation of AR-based book search systems aims to enhance user experience (UX) by simplifying navigation and resource discovery. This innovative approach leverages interactive elements that allow users to visualize book locations and related multimedia content through smartphone applications and AR glasses (Okoro, 2023). Preliminary studies indicate that AR applications can significantly reduce search time and improve user engagement by creating an intuitive and interactive platform that meets modern technological expectations (Chima, 2024). However, user adaptation, system integration, and maintenance are critical factors that influence its efficacy. The study examines the specific impact of AR on user satisfaction, exploring factors such as ease of use, system responsiveness, and the overall improvement in information retrieval processes. By analyzing user feedback and technological performance, this research will provide insights into the potential of AR to transform traditional library search methods. The goal is to bridge the gap between emerging digital tools and academic needs, ensuring that technological innovations align seamlessly with user behavior and learning styles (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the promising capabilities of AR-based book search systems at Abia State University, there are concerns regarding their practical effectiveness and user adaptability. Preliminary observations reveal that some users struggle to integrate the AR interface into their search habits, citing issues with system glitches and misaligned virtual markers (Okoro, 2023). Furthermore, inconsistent signal strength and hardware limitations occasionally disrupt the immersive experience. These technical and usability challenges lead to diminished trust in the system and lower overall satisfaction. This study therefore seeks to identify the key obstacles that hinder efficient AR-based navigation, evaluate its influence on the overall user experience, and determine whether the benefits outweigh the challenges in the context of an academic library environment (Chima, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of AR-based book search on user satisfaction.
To identify technical and usability challenges associated with the AR system.
To propose strategies for optimizing the AR experience in academic libraries.
Research Questions:
How does AR-based book search influence overall user experience?
What technical challenges impede the effective use of AR in book search?
How can the system be improved to better meet user expectations?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the transformative potential of augmented reality in library search processes, providing insights that can inform the development of more engaging digital interfaces. The findings will help library administrators and technology developers address current shortcomings, optimize system performance, and enhance overall user satisfaction. In doing so, the research contributes to broader discussions on integrating emerging technologies in educational environments to support improved academic research and resource discovery (Eze, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the AR-based book search system at Abia State University. It does not extend to other AR applications or library services beyond the scope of book search functionality.
Definitions of Terms:
Augmented Reality (AR): Technology that overlays digital information onto the physical world.
User Experience (UX): The overall satisfaction and ease with which users interact with a system.
Book Search Interface: The digital platform used to locate library resources.
